With a title like My Life II ... the Journey Continues (Act I), you'd naturally expect the latest album from Mary J. Blige to be a modern version of her 1994 sophomore album, My Life. And it is and isn't at the same time. It's true that the newer album, which was released in the U.S. on Nov. 22, 2011, shares some of the same traits and themes as the original album, including a brilliant mixture of hip-hop, R&B and Soul, as well lyrics that explore painful relationships. But honestly, all her albums in between the two My Life releases did the same thing. That said, any Mary J. release is one worth hearing, and although this one may not reach the emotional and creative heights of the album it's named after, but it's still far better than the vast majority of R&B albums you'll hear all year.
